Minor in Linguistics

For the Linguistics Minor, a student must satisfy the following requirements: all the courses in Group A; at least one course from Group B; and either a second course from Group B, or one course from Group C.

A. Core areas of theoretical linguistics:

LING 202: Principles of Linguistics
LING 205Q: Principles of Phonology
LING 206Q: Syntax and Semantics

B. Linguistics extensions:

Any other 200's-level Linguistics course.

C. Linguistics in related fields:

ANTH 244: Language and Culture
COMS 202: Speech and Language Acquisition
PHIL 211Q: Symbolic Logic
PHIL 241: Language: Meaning and Truth
PSYC 221: Introduction to the Psychology of Language
SOCI 212: Language and Society

Completion of a minor requires that a student earn a C (2.0) grade or better in each of the required courses for that minor. A maximum of 3 credits towards the minor may be transfer credits of courses equivalent to University of Connecticut courses. Substitutions are not posible for required courses in a minor.

 
Major in Linguistics and Philosophy
For the Linguistics and Philosophy Major, a minimum of four courses (twelve credits) at the 200 level from each department is required. Specifically required courses are Linguistics 206 (Syntax and Semantics) and Philosophy 241 (Language: Meaning and Truth).
 
Major in Linguistics and Psychology
For the Linguistics and Psychology Major, a minimum of four courses (twelve credits) at the 200 level from each department is required. Specifically required linguistics courses are: LING 202 and 215C, and at least two out of the other 200 level linguistics courses.

Specifically required psychology courses are: PSYC 202Q and 221, and at least two out of PSYC 210W, 215W, 220, 236, 254, and 256.

All students in the Linguistics/Psychology Major are strongly encouraged to take LING/PSYC 305 in their senior year.
