Linguistics at the University of Connecticut
The Linguistics Department of The University of Connecticut has emphases on theoretical linguistics and first language acquisition. Because some potential applicants are interested in applied linguistics, we point out that the department does not offer degrees in Applied Linguistics or Teaching English as a Second Language. If your research interests are in these areas, you might wish to apply for a degree program in our School of Education. In that case, we suggest that you write to:

Background Requirements and Admission

We require some background in formal generative grammar in the form of course work taken before applying to our program. In addition, we require that a sample research paper written in English (such as a term paper for a class) be submitted with the application. We strongly recommend that the paper be on a topic in linguistics.

The Admissions Committee will consider all of your previous preparation for graduate work here in making a decision regarding admission to our program. This includes undergraduate and graduate work, as well as TOEFL scores. This information, taken together with your personal statement, research paper, and letters of recommendation, will be used to indicate your overall potential. The University generally requires an undergraduate GPA of 3.0, and, for international students, a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper) or 213 (computer) for admission to graduate study.
 
Application Materials
We will mail you the Graduate School application materials, unless we have information indicating that you have already been sent these materials (if you follow the link for the Graduate School below, you will be able to apply on-line). If you choose to apply, please follow the instructions on these materials carefully, especially with regard to submitting documents to the Graduate School. They will not release your application to us until it is complete. If there are any questions regarding the application materials, please direct them to:

You should also consult the web site of the Graduate School. There is a special form we require to be sent to the Department of Linguistics; you can download it here.

We begin considering students for admission in January. It is to your advantage to ensure that your application materials are received as early in the year as possible.
 
Application Deadlines
All applications requesting financial aid from the department must be received by January 15; other international applications by March 15; all other applications by April 15.
 
Financial Aid
Financial aid awards (in the form of fellowships, teaching assistantships and research assistantships) are available for PhD- Students. Once the department has decided who will be admitted to the program, all admitted students are evaluated for financial aid awards. We will begin notifying students of awards in February, but unfortunately some decisions can only be made later in the year.

U.S. citizens who think that they might qualify for financial aid based on need should refer to the preliminary information included with the application materials sent by the Graduate School. Please note the processing of these forms takes a very long time. We advise you to send your materials in as soon as you can.

Additional Information

Our program offers graduate training toward the Ph.D. degree. It is possible to obtain a Master's degree in the course of this Ph.D study. However, we do not have a separate Master's degree program.

In general, our graduate students enroll full-time. We offer courses throughout the day and cannot accept applicants who are restricted to taking evening courses. Furthermore, we do not admit students for entry in the spring term.
